Poetry in Ocean
Peacock Cemetery

The peacocks strut among the tombstones,
sapphire and jade
cascading over the Hollywood Forever sign.
Their rainbows dazzle against the sunset as
bodies decompose in the ground.
They flock past
the crosses, the stars, the crescents, and wheels,
coffins and caskets of all shapes and prices and afterlives.
In one corner, rich boxes of marble covered
in peacock stains, droppings filling
in the etchings of a family name,
all the same to the land of peacocks.
They dance around the graves, dig deep into earth
to rustle against the silence and
radiate across the dead.
It’s their world,
and we’re just the dirt
and the bones
beneath their talons.
